Itchy Feet

admin on August 24th, 2010

I cannot believe it’s been over 12 months since we left on our big 14 week trip! :(

This time last year we were up North enjoying the sun. In fact, I believe we were on the Sunshine Coast at the end of August.

What I wouldn’t give to be up there escaping this freezing weather right now!

Although we are thankful for the rain (being farmers and all).

I also can’t believe we haven’t been able to fit in even a 2 week holiday this year.

It has just been SO busy!

So busy that I think the poor caravan has only been used once this year - for a church camp (and once as a spare room).

The other day the kids were all “we wanna go on another big trip”.

If only!

Hopefully the couple of weekends away we have coming up will help satisfy our “itchy feet”.

In the meantime, we’re focusing on planning a trip to the West next year.

Only 3 weeks this time but it’ll be good just to get away for a bit again.

Fingers crossed we can make it happen!

Peterborough Caravan Park

admin on April 16th, 2010

We weren’t sure what to expect at the Peterborough Caravan Park as our RAA book lists it as an unrated park. So, we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. It’s a lovely little park in a lovely town.

FACILITIES

The park has a lovely, well-maintained camp kitchen area with a television. There is also a mini golf area to keep the kids entertained and is right next door to a nice playground and park with water, bridges and ducks. A nice sized laundry room and bathrooms were also provided. 1.5/2.0

PRICING

It cost us $36 for the night with the 3 kids. Caravan Parks just aren’t all that cheap anymore but this is on the lower end of the scale and seemed well worth the cost. 2.0/2.0

CLEANLINESS

Everything was well maintained and cleaned. 2.0/2.0

AMBIENCE

The park had a lovely country atmosphere and felt very safe.#160; Being a smaller park, everything was nice and close which was great. 2.0/2.0

LOCATION

It was a little bit “out of the way” but was well sign posted. Located right next to a lovely park which added to the ambience and the facilities available nearby. 1.5/2.0

OVERALL

We would definitely stay there again. A lovely park in a lovely spot. 9.0/10.0

Caravanning with Kids - The Final Days

Jodes on October 11th, 2009

Wednesday 7th October - Day 99

Today was a day about family.  We headed across town to see my grandparents and had a lovely lunch with them before heading back to pick up the caravan, say a final goodbye to our friends (only for now) and head to Steve’s sisters place.  The kids are really enjoying seeing everyone one again.

Lunch - Fish & chips

Tea - kids had cold meat & salad and we had beef casserole

Thursday 8th October - Day 100

Our final holiday “fun” was taking the kids to see Colin Buchanan in concert.  They really enjoyed themselves attending the concert with their cousins.  We then went to Koorong for lunch, a play (for the kids) and a browse.  Ended up spending plenty of money (as usual).  We then went to watch my brother in law play indoor netball.  I’ve never seen indoor netball before so it was quite an experience.

Lunch -kids had lunch packs at Koorong, we had YUMMY coffee and cake and then didn’t really have a “proper” lunch as such.  :)

Tea - Pizza

Friday 9th October - Day 101

Haha, we actually got 101 days away!!!!  Steve figured this out a couple of weeks ago and thought perhaps we could come home a day earlier but I declined.  :)  We left Adelaide just after 10am for the trip home, stopping several times along the way.  First at a fruit & veg place just on the highway out where I stocked up ready for home.  We then had a picnic lunch in Port Pirie with my parents and picked up our cat that they had been minding while we were away.  After another stop in Port Augusta for some shopping and an early tea, we headed home, arriving around 7.30pm.

The kids ran around the house rather excited at rediscovering everything.  I think they are happy to be home.  I have mixed feelings.  In some respects, it’s nice to be home, in others, I could quite happily still be away.  No doubt this won’t be the last of our trips although there probably won’t be one quite that long for a while now!

Lunch - Ham & Salad Rolls

Tea - Barnacle Bills (adults) & KFC (kids)

Caravanning With Kids - Week 14

Jodes on October 7th, 2009

We have now been away for a full 3 calendar months.  And I think that’s about our limit.  Everyone is pretty much looking forward to getting home.  The kids are keen to see their friends and have their own beds.  I’m looking forward to my own bed (my back is starting to play up) and a bit more space.  Not sure what Steve is looking forward to.  Neither is he (I just asked him).

While we are all looking forward to getting home, we also have the “travel bug” so no doubt plans for the next trip will begin pretty much as soon as we get home!  Not that I think we’re likely to get away for 14 weeks again in a hurry.  Maybe when we semi-retire.  In the meantime, we’ll look forward to plenty of 2-4 week trips.

Wednesday 30th September – Day 92

This morning we enjoyed relaxing around the park.  This particular one has an indoor playground which the younger two have really enjoyed playing on.  Shakob and I had a hit of tennis and then we all went for a swim.

This afternoon we took a drive around Hallidays Point and in to Tuncurry and Forster for a look around.

Lunch – Pancakes

Tea – Cooked Chicken from the supermarket with salad

Thursday 1st october – Day 93

We drove from Hallidays Point to Sydney today.  This is pretty much our last “tourist” stop before heading homewards.  It was a reasonably easy days driving and getting to our park in Sydney was surprisingly easy (compared to what we expected).  We are staying at Lane Cove River in Macquarie Park which is part of the national park and a simply beautiful part of Sydney.  You would never know you are right in the city!!!!

After tea we took advantage of a ranger talk and tour put on by the park.  The kids loved wandering around the park at night spotting possums and bandicoots.

Lunch – Sandwiches/ Toast

Tea – Fried Rice

Friday 2nd October – Day 94

This morning I had a meet up with some people I know online.  People who were a fantastic support for me throughout my breakdown and subsequent recovery process.  It was such a pleasure to meet them and be able to chat over coffee.

After that we went for a drive around Olympic Park.

In the evening we caught up with my brother and his family which was great.

Lunch – Packed ham & cheese sandwiches

Tea - Pizza

Saturday 3rd October – Day 95

Our plans to spend the day touring the city on public transport were a little thwarted by the rain.  Instead we spent the morning doing some schoolwork with the kids and a load of washing.  After an early lunch we headed off to Olympic Park again and took the kids swimming at the Olympic Pool and Aquatic Centre. They had a fabulous time there with their cousins.

After a quick McDonald’s tea, we went to the 6pm Hillsong service.  We had been planning to go there on Sunday morning but rearranged our plans so that we could head in to the city on Sunday morning instead of this morning.  It was a great service and the kids all had a great time at Hillsong Kids (a program run for the kids during the service).

Lunch – Baked Potatoes

Tea – McDonald’s (I tired one of the Angus beef burgers…yummmmmm!!!!!)

Sunday 4th October – Day 96

It was still raining this morning but we decided to brave it and head into the city on the train regardless.  We did contemplate taking the car but the kids were really keen to go on the train so we did.  The showers were intermittent so we didn’t really get wet.

We took the train into the city and over the Harbour Bridge.  It’s not as big as I was expecting but still pretty cool anyway.  We then took a ferry over to Manly which gave us a much better look at the bridge as well as the opera house.

When the ferry brought us back, we took a walk around to the opera house to see it up close before venturing home again on the train (well 3 trains actually).

Sundays there is a Family Fun Day where you can all travel for $2.50 so it worked out cheaper for us in the end (than going on Saturday).

It wasn’t raining when we got back so we packed up and headed off, figuring if we could at least get out of Sydney and a couple of hundred kilometres down the road, it would break the trip home up a little.  The kids travelled really well so I think it was a good move.  We stayed at a free place in Gunning which meant we didn’t have to pay twice for the 1 night (because we had already paid to stay in Sydney).

Lunch – Cocktail Frankfurts and leftover Fried Rice

Tea – Subway along the way to Gunning

Monday 5th October – Day 97

Today has been one of those days which you’re rather glad to have behind you.  We packed up early and left Gunning by 6.30am (which is 5.30am by our body clocks due to the start of daylight savings on Sunday morning).  Around 800km we pulled in to Mildura, in good time as it turns out.  It was a pretty boring part of the trip but the kids did pretty well all things considered.

We ended up splurging on an ensuite site as they were going to put us on one and not give us the key.  For $5 we figured if we’re there, we may as well have our own bathroom!  It was a nice little luxury for our last stop in a caravan park for this trip.

Lunch – Ham, Cheese and Salad sandwiches

Tea – Tuna & Vegie Pasta Dish

Tuesday 6th October - Day 98

I really struggled with leaving Mildura this morning.  It kind of felt like the end of our holiday as from here we’re headed to Adelaide to catch up with a few people etc before heading home.  Not that it won’t be nice to see those people, it’s just a shift of focus from the rest of the trip.

We actually checked out of the caravan park after 10am (only by about 15 minutes) we were so reluctant to get going this morning!

With only 400km to travel, it was surprising how long it took us.  By the time we checked out late and then did some shopping in Mildura before hitting the road, then an extended stop at the Monash Playground (awesome playground!!!), we didn’t end up reaching our destination in Adelaide until around 5pm.

We then shared a wonderful evening with the friends we made in Port Douglas.  I have a feeling it’s going to be a rather special friendship.  In part because we just seem to click but in part because we’ve shared parts of our trip with them and had some amazing moments together.  Naturally, the time there passed way too quickly :( .

Lunch - Chip Rolls

Tea - BBQ

Caravanning With Kids - Week 12

Jodes on September 28th, 2009

Wednesday 16th September – Day 78

With our theme park tickets now expired, we spent today actually seeing some of the Gold Coast.  We drove to Surfer’s Paradise where we took the Aquaduck tour.  This is a combination bus/boat so you drive around the streets then straight into the water.  The kids even got to have a drive while we were in the water which was fun!!!  :)  We were taken past some of the mansions along the Nerang River – absolutely astounding how much money some people have!!!

After the duck tour, we had a lovely lunch at the clock hotel ($6.95 steaks) and caught a glimpse of the meter maids while we were there.  We then went for a walk along the beach.  You can’t go to the Gold Coast without visiting Surfer’s Paradise beach!

All in all, it was a lovely family day out with no real agenda other than exploring and spending time together.

Lunch – Clock Hotel

Tea -

Thursday 17th September – Day 79

The kids were booked into the kids activities at the caravan park today so Steve and I enjoyed a couple of hours on our own (always a treasured opportunity on a trip like this).  Naturally the kids had a blast.  After some lunch, the kids had free rides on the parks go karts (thanks to Shakob winning so many prizes at the kids activities) and then enjoyed a swim in the caravan park pool.

It was a lovely relaxing day and a great way to finish our time here.

Lunch - Sandwiches

Tea – Sizzler

Friday 18th September – Day 80

This morning we had to pack up and bid goodbye to Treasure Island.  Initially we had intended to move on to New South Wales and stay in Tweed Heads somewhere but a lot of the places were expensive so we followed some friends advice (and the friends) and went to Kirra Beach near Coolangatta.

It was a huge drive (about 40 minutes).  I think perhaps it is the shortest move we’ve had so far.  After a shop to replenish our food supplies and a little look around, we spent a few hours enjoying the pool at the caravan park before heading out again for ice cream.  The ice cream was awesome although left us not very hungry come tea time!!!!  :)

Lunch – Salad

Tea – Hamburgers in Bread

Saturday 19th September – Day 81

Today was pretty much about taking it easy and enjoying the lovely spot where we are staying at the moment.  We spent some time in the pool this morning, met up with a lovely couple I have met through the internet after lunch and then spent the rest of the afternoon playing beach games on the beach.

Lunch – Homemade Ham Subways (Toasted!!!!  Yum!!!!)

Tea – Pizza and Cheesecake Birthday Tea for Mac

Sunday 20th September – Day 82

We attended the local Uniting Church this morning before packing up a picnic and heading off to the Springbrook National Park for the afternoon and evening.  Our first stop was the Natural Bridge which is a waterfall that falls through a hole in the rocks.  It was simply stunning to see and experience.

Throughout the afternoon we visited a couple of other waterfalls and some spectacular lookouts.  We also booked in to do a Glow Worm tour.

The only problem with the Glow Worm tour was the starting time of 7.30pm.  Getting tea in the National Park proved to be somewhat of a challenge.  We ended up finding a cafe that fed us at 5pm (many others closed at 4 or earlier) and then had a couple of hours to fill in (mostly in the dark).

The Glow Worm tour was amazing.  I had no idea about Glow Worms at all!  For a start, they are not really a worm but a fly larvae (basically a maggot).  I also thought they absorbed light in the daytime and emitted it at night but they actually create their own light.  They are so beautiful.  There are also a variety of fungi that are illuminescent although they are mostly found during the summer months.

Lunch – Ham & Cheese Rolls

Tea – Hamburgers for us.  Hot Dogs/Nachos for the kids.

Monday 21st September – Day 83

Our plans today included a visit to Tropical Fruit World but Steve hurt his back on Saturday (his back seems to be an ongoing issue this trip) and it seems to be getting worse so we decided to take it easy instead.

The kids and I spent some time in the pool this morning.  I was quite intrigued by their ingenuity as they were creating advertising scenes for all kinds of products (mostly made up) and then acting them out, filming them etc (all pretend of course).  It included many “takes” (perhaps a spin off from what they saw at movie world?).  It was quite creative.  If only I could have gotten some of it on our video camera but they weren’t keen to act for the camera.

After lunch we went out for ice cream/ cake.  I really wanted to try this Violet Crumble cake I had seen at the Souvlaki Hut but they keep selling out. :(  Steve decided to see another Chiropractor for his back.  We’re still not sure on the best action for it.

We then went for a drive to Pacific Fair.  It wasn’t all that comfortable for Steve walking around but the Chiropractor had recommended it so we took it fairly slowly.  After a quick tea, we took the kids to see G-Force in 3D.  And I thought the theme parks were expensive?????  Taking the family to the movies (and buying popcorn etc) was almost as expensive as half a theme park ticket.  LOL.  Fortunately we don’t do it too often!  The movie was great and the kids had an absolute ball!  :)

On the way back to the park, we stopped at a Souvlaki Hut to get me a piece of Violet Crumble cake.  I’d eyed it off the first day we arrived here and then the nearest store sold out and I haven’t been able to get any.  So it was a victory to call into this other store and find they had some!!!!  A perfect end to a mostly lovely day (I say mostly because it’s not much fun for Steve with his bad back).

Lunch – Ham & Salad Rolls

Tea – KFC snack packs followed by way too much popcorn at the movies!!!!

Tuesday 22nd September – Day 84

We have extended our stay here for an extra night to allow Steve to rest his back.  He managed to get into a physiotherapist for some treatment.  His back isn’t straight at the moment and the physio managed to straighten it out.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t stay straight.

The kids spent some time doing some schoolwork and we enjoyed some more time in the pool.  I think we were all in need of a “down day” so it didn’t hurt any of us to just hang out at the park for the day.

Lunch – Pancakes

Tea - Haystacks

Springbrook Glow Worms

admin on September 24th, 2009

Shell-Bell

I liked the Glow Worms.  They looked pretty.  Glow Worms aren’t actually worms, they are maggots.  I liked the glowing leaves and glowing mushrooms.  We went on a walk to this big hole where the glow worms are at someone’s house.

A story the man told us: There was this lady that came in late and they had already started the tour and they went around and the man’s wife said to meet them at the glowing mushrooms.  She took the wrong stairs and then she saw the glow worms and went down to look at them and Freddie the Python was wrapped around the tree and the lady knelt down to have a look at the glow worms and she knelt on Freddie.  Then she got freaked out because Freddie was trying to bite her.  Then the group came and saw her.

TJ

It was good and it was fun.  The hats were glowing to light up the path where we walked.  The Glow Worms were blue and there were leaves on our hands that glowed (note from mum: from fungi).

Shakob

This is how the guy found out about the glow worms at his house.  He was drinking beer and the clouds were touching the ground on a foggy night.  He saw the clouds glowing green so he went to have a look and the grass was slippery and he slipped up and fell down into a hole.  He got his foot stuck in a tree and he looked and he saw the glow worms and he was hanging there through the night.  Now he does glow worm tours.

They also have a 4 metre python living there.

The glow worms stay in the larvae stage for 11 months and then turn into a fly for 3 days.

If you would like more information about the Glow Worms, you can visit the Springbrook Glow Worm website.

Gold Coast Theme Parks

Shakob on September 21st, 2009

While we were staying on the Gold Coast we got a super pass to Movie World, Wet ‘N’ Wild Water World and Sea World. With the super pass it allows us to go to any of 3 parks as much as we want over 14 days.

Movie World:

At Movie World there is a Looney Toones kids section. It has lots of little kids rides that kids 7 and under would enjoy, but also has a rollercoaster that forces you back into your seat though it is nothing like superman escape. They have a new show called Hollywood Stunt Drivers, they do amazing stunts with race cars. The six main rides are Superman Escape, Lethal Weapon, Batwing Spaceshot, Wild West Falls, Scooby Doo Spooky Coaster and Batman adventure. Superman Escape is a rollercoaster that goes up to 100kph. Lethal Weapon is a rollercoaster that you hang from the rollercoaster. Batwing spaceshot is something that shoots up heaps high. Wild West Falls is a rollercoaster that gets pushed by water and at the end it has a 20 metre 70kph drop. The Scooby Doo ride is like a house of horrors until you go into a section where it is dark and there is lots of drops and turns. The Batman adventure ride is a simulator of driving batmans jet plane thingy.

I liked Wild West Falls and scooby doo was really fun.

Wet ‘N’ Wild

At Wet ‘N’ Wild there is lots of different waterslides. They have 7 rides that are good fun for all the family. They are aqua 8 racer, twister, white water mountain, speed coaster, the wave pool, mammoth falls and calypso beach. On the aqua 8 racer it is a water slide that you race each other down on a mat. On the twister 2 people go down a enclosed slide and you twist over each other. on White Water Mountain it just has 4 normal waterslides. On the Speed Coaster you go down a fast waterslide on a 2 person tube. The wave pool is a pool that makes big waves. Mammoth falls is a big wide  waterslide that you go down on a 6 person tube. At calypso beach is a pool that you sit on a ring and the water pushes you around the pool. There is 5 thrill rides. They are  the Kamikaze, the Tornado, the Surf rider, the Black Hole and the Mach  5. On the Kamikaze  you sit on a 2 person tube and go down a U shaped slide at 50kph. On the Tornado you go on a 4 person tube down a steep slide into a cone shaped section where you go right up on the sides. On the Surf Rider you drop 30 metres on a giant surf board. On the black hole it is a waterslide  that is pitch black for most of the ride. The mach 5  is a waterslide that almost is a vertical drop.

My favourite ride at Wet ‘N’ Wild is the Tornado and I also really liked the Speed Coaster.

Sea World

At Sea World there was 4 rides. they were The Jet Rescue, The Corkscrew The Burmuda Triangle and the Flume ride.  The Jet Rescue is a rollercoaster that you sit on a jet ski and it goes up to 80kph. The corkscrew is a rollercoaster that does 3 loops. The Burmuda Triangle is a boat ride. The Flume ride is a boat ride that has a big drop at the end. The sea animals they have there are fish, polar bears, dolphins, sting rays, seals and sharks. There is a area where you can touch sting rays, they feel slimy.

My favourite ride was the Jet Rescue and my favourite show was the dolphin show.

Caravanning With Kids - Week Eleven

Jodes on September 17th, 2009

Wednesday 9th September – Day 71

We went back to Movie World today with the plan to actually go to all the shows they put on. We’d seen a couple but our visits so far had been half days and many of the shows are around lunch time so we’d been missing them.

The Stunt Driver show is so far the favourite but we did enjoy the others including a Looney Tunes show, a Wild West Show, Batman, Scooby Doo and Marilyn Monroe. I was amazed at how many shows there actually were.

Once we were finished with the shows we went on some of our favourite rides to finish off the day.

Lunch – Pizza Rolls and Cheese Rolls with Finger Buns for dessert (all bought discounted – yah!)

Tea – BBQ Chicken Kebabs, Sausages and Veggies. Hungry Jacks ice cream cones for dessert

Thursday 10th September – Day 72

We were in need of a break today so planned a quiet day around the park. We knew we had the Outback Spectacular to go to in the evening and didn’t want to be worn out for that.

In the morning the kids went to the Kids Club for a couple of hours where they were filmed for a tv segment on local caravan parks. It meant they got to do a lot of different park activities including go karts, mini golf and craft. They were also given a free slushie as a thank you for participating.

I was pretty exhausted and ended up falling asleep while the kids were having lunch. I must have been tired as I don’t usually sleep quite so easily. It was good though as it meant I enjoyed going out in the evening a lot more.

The Outback Spectacular was amazing. The things they can get animals to do just astounds me. It was well set up so that everyone could enjoy their meal while watching the show. The food was delicious as well (always a good selling point for me lol). The kids really enjoyed sitting with their friends and taking in the show as well as being served directly by the wait staff.

Lunch – Cocktail Frankfurts

Tea – 3 Course meal at the Outback Spectacular. Salad, Steak & Vegies and Pavlova

Friday 11th September – Day 73

We headed back to Wet n Wild today. The weather has been absolutely fabulous while we’ve been here. Some days a cool breeze will spring up in the afternoon so it works out best to go to Wet n Wild in the morning and then play it by ear. We stayed there until about 3pm then got changed and spent a small amount of time at Movie World taking in a few favourite rides. It’s great having the 2 parks so close together that you can easily do that (well, easily if you have an unlimited ticket like we have).

Lunch – Pizza and Cheese and Bacon Pull Aparts from Brumby’s

Tea – Veal Schnitzel with tomato paste, fresh tomato and grilled cheese topping with chips and vegies

Saturday 12th September – Day 74

We made our final visit to Movie World today. TJ is loving the Stunt Drivers show so we went and saw that. Steve finally got to try out the superman ride and I took the kids to the Shrek 4D movie (I think I actually enjoyed it more the 2nd time around!). There seemed to be more characters wandering around today (as well as more people). We made our final purchases, had a couple of other rides and then decided to call it a day.

I bought a Movie World bag for each of the kids and put all of what we’ve bought over our time at the theme parks into the bags, as well as a few treats I grabbed from Woollies. They then had their very own “showbags”. It was lots of fun. They each had a t-shirt and hat, a toy, a souvenir cup (which turned out quite worthwhile as refills were quite reasonable in comparison with all the other prices at the “worlds”) plus their treats and were quite happy with that.

Lunch – Cheese Sandwiches

Tea – Marinated Chicken Wingettes and vegies cooked on the bbq.

Sunday 13th September – Day 75

After a late night last night, we were all a little sluggish this morning. The caravan park bistro had a buffet breakfast so we went out for a lovely breakfast with the “N” family. After a cuppa with them and our other friends who were leaving the park today, we headed in to take a look at Brisbane.

We headed to South Bank which is apparently the place to see when you go to Brisbane. It was pretty busy as a festival had just begun there but we enjoyed having a wander and seeing the Brisbane river and enjoying the entertainment. We didn’t enjoy the cost of parking though!!!!

We then went for a drive through the city (figuring Sunday was the best day to attempt that). I thought the Brisbane River looked a lot nicer down the “industrial” end than it did at South Bank.

While we there, we went back to DFO near the Brisbane Airport for some shopping and a bit to eat before heading back to the Gold Coast in time to go to an evening church service.

Lunch – Subway

Tea – Hungry Jacks (a big day for take aways I know!!!)

Monday 14th September – Day 76

We headed off reasonably early to make our last visit to Sea World. The kids were keen to see Toasted TV being filmed and we knew they’d be there today from 10am. The theme parks have gradually been getting busier and busier during our time here as the holidays get closer. The upside to that is that some of the things that had been closed in our initial 2 visits were now open so we got to do a couple of new things.

The kids were keen to see the Sesame Street show and Shell-Bell ended up getting selected to dance on stage with the characters which she loved.

Lunch – Chip Sandwiches (quick and easy to grab on the way there!)

Tea – Unfried Rice

Tuesday 15th September – Day 77

Today was the final day on our 14 day theme park tickets. They’re a great idea and make the costs of going quite reasonable in comparison to buying a single day ticket for a single pass. We’re feeling pretty weary so took things pretty easy this morning. The kids went to the kids club at the park for a couple of hours and enjoyed the go kart races they were running. We then had lunch before heading off to Wet n Wild for a couple of hours.

TJ couldn’t really understand the concept of the 14 day tickets. He wanted to stay at the park today and go to Wet n Wild tomorrow. I’m not sure if he really “gets it” even now but we did go to Wet n Wild and had a great family time together. It was the perfect ending to our theme park “mayhem”.

The local Eagle Boys was advertising $5.50 pizzas so that was an easy choice for tea. We booked the tennis court from 6pm so had an early tea then went to play some tennis. I then took the younger 2 for a swim in the pool while the tennis playing continued. They really enjoyed getting to swim in the dark. :)

Lunch – Leftover rice and sandwiches

Tea - Pizza
