Things Can Only Get Better

We’ve just spent our first night in the new caravan which was rather exciting. Yesterday was an interesting day. To begin with, it was freezing cold. Given it was HOT when we left home, I’d packed an overnight bag with clothing appropriate for warmer weather in it. So we were a tad on the cold side at times during the day. The car was so heavily packed in preparation for our trip that it was almost impossible to get to the rest of our clothing (and we weren’t quite cold enough to go to the effort).

First port of call for the day was getting electric brakes fitted to the car. Knowing the car would be heavily packed, DH checked with the company fitting the brakes to see if they needed to get into the boot. They were quite adamant that they didn’t. However, the process took 45 minutes longer than expected and when we picked the car up, the boot had been emptied and repacked (albeit not very well).

The delay made us almost an hour late for our “pick up” appointment which made the rest of the day quite jam packed. We planned to go to Ikea before booking in to the caravan park as by location, it was a lot closer to the caravan place and would save us back-tracking. I was hoping to pick up some melamine plates, cups and so on. However, they didn’t have any. This morning’s breakfast was eaten out of rather small plastic bowls. Hopefully I’ll find some today.

It hasn’t been easy travelling with a sick child. TJ continues to hack up a lung (and mucus) on a regular basis and we’ve started him on the “just in case” antibiotics the doctor sent with us. Finding food that he’ll eat right now has been somewhat of a challenge (hooray for yoghurt). Then last night he Christened the new bed - it’s not uncommon to end up with a wet bed when he’s sick.

Farmboy and I are both battling sore throats and sore ears ourselves. Fingers crossed we can fight whatever we have without it getting too much worse.

I’m tired from an early start this morning (Tuesday morning - not sure when I’ll get a chance to actually publish this) and then discovered my face product had leaked all through my toiletry bag when I went for a shower. LOL. Oh, the joys of “roughing it”.

It will take us a while to get things sorted in the caravan and pick up the bits and pieces we need and while it sounds like we’ve had a bit of a rough start, it’s all good. After all, things can only get better from here on in, right?

The kids are ultra excited (as you would be). Last night all 3 slept on the second double bed and that seemed to work okay. We have a few choice when it comes to sleeping arrangements so it’ll be some trial and error to figure out what works.

It certainly feels decadent after the camper trailer. Having running water over a sink is FABULOUS!!!!!

The cupboards are GREAT too. It’s amazing what you can fit in what looks like a tiny amount of cupboard space. I was worried about how well we’d fit but so far we have everyone’s clothing packed away and still plenty of room for food and kitchen stuff.

It also feels so BIG to us. The camper trailer has enough room in the main section for all 5 of us to sleep and that’s pretty much it. The annexe then becomes the kitchen, lounge, luggage storage and so on. Here we have the two beds and then in between is the kitchen area, wardrobe and cupboards and table/lounge area. The annexe (which DH is putting up as I write this), is bonus space.

Of course, living in it for 3 months, I’m sure we’ll be glad for all the space we can get.

Last night we had our first taste of what it’s like not to have a TV. With the Brownlow Medal Count on, I think our 10 year old (Shakob) was disappointed not to be able to see some of it. Not that he’d have been able to stay up to see the results anyway. This morning I sent him to buy the day’s paper and he’s been happily reading up on all the details. So he’s learning that there are other ways of communicating that don’t involve television.

This morning the kids have been busy exploring. They’ve found the playground and the games room (with TV although none of them were interested enough to stay and watch) and are now wandering around looking for baby ducks to feed. Caravan Parks provide plenty of entertainment and interest factor for kids.

So, we’ve had a little bit of a bumpy start but nothing too serious. I think we’re going to be quite happy with our little purchase. :)
